Pronunciation Is So Important!

by Jason Catizone on 07/08/24

Many people studying English are very concerned about their grammar. Others are really wanting to improve their speaking speed. This is all very understandable, but actually, correct pronunciation is even more important than perfect grammar and speedy speech. Why?

Well, think of it like this: let's say that a man named "Joe" wants to learn how to play the piano. He studies and correctly learns all of the musical terminology there is, including of course the names of all of the piano keys, and piano chords. Joe also practices day and night to improve his playing speed. However, when he one day plays a very famous song for his friends, he plays many incorrect notes... so many incorrect notes, in fact, that Joe's friends have trouble even guessing which song he is playing! Nobody will really care that Joe knows musical terminology, note and chord names, and can play at lightning speed. His friends will simply think, "Joe's not a great piano player!"  Why? Because playing the correct notes is far important than knowing musical terminology, theory, and being able to play at a fast speed.

So - when it comes to speaking English - I would encourage you to focus more on your pronunciation than on grammar and speed. Are grammar and the ability to speak at conversation speed important? Of course! However, it's even more important for you to have the correct sound when you speak.

Keep up the good work!
