Do or does, have or has? How Can I Improve My English Grammar in 2024?
by Jason Catizone on 07/24/24
One area in our language which causes English as a Second Language (ESL) students a lot of difficulty is when they need to use present tense verbs. Should they use do, or does? Have, or has? English learners are often confused about which forms to use. So how can you improve your English Grammar in 2024?
There is a simple reminder which can help you know which is the correct word to use in your sentence. "He," "she," and "it" use the "verb plus s/es" form in the present tense. Here are some examples to help illustrate that rule:
I sleep.
You sleep.
We sleep.
They sleep.
But, He/She/It sleeps.
I work.
You work.
We work.
They work.
But, He/She/It works.
James and Carla (They) eat.
But, Frank (He) eats.
My brother and I (We) snore.
But, Betty (She) snores.
So, should you use do or does, have or has? Just ask yourself, "Is the subject he, she, or it?" If so, then add "s" or "es" when using a present tense verb. So:
I give homework.
But, The teacher (He/She) gives homework.
We have homework.
But, My sister (She) has homework.
